North Georgia Zoo owns a variety of animals including the African Crested Porcupine. The porcupines shed out quills just like hair. These quills have long been used as ornaments for jewelry making and quill work in Africa. We have collected the quills from all of our porcupines over the years and have made handmade jewelry. There is a variety of necklace, bracelet, and earring styles available for purchase. All proceeds from the sales of these pieces go to benefit our porcupines.  Check out all our styles!

About Our African Crested Porcupines
Picture
North Georgia Zoo is home to several African Crested Porcupines. NGZ is part of a conservation and education breeding program. The African Crested porcupines are used for our outreach programs, wild animal encounters and creature features. Our Porcupines have also made their debut in commercials, movies and traveling to NY for a variety of talk shows. NGZ has a fun and unique training program for these guys that include targeting and going to their marks.  This is often demonstrated on tours.  What makes the African Crested porcupine quills so unique is their size, strength, coloration and patterns. In their native country, their quills are used for body piercing, jewelry, hunting and more. Porcupine quills are actually modified hair. They shed out like normal hair. We then collect the  the quills.  The quills are cleaned and sorted according to size and length. Some of the larger ones are used to make pens and decoration.  The medium ones are perfect for beads, crafts and unique jewelry.  The smallest ones can be used for fishing lures. Each quill has its own unique pattern so each piece bought will be unique in itself.  We have just started this line of handmade jewelry to better share the uniqueness of these animals with everyone.  Enjoy!
